Aluminum Heat Sink Profile Case

A representative aluminum extrusion case linking heat sink profile design, die planning, CNC mounting features, surface finishing and final inspection.

Selection of finned aluminum heat sink profiles and extruded components

The manufacturing challenge

A finned section must offer useful surface area without making the die fragile or the profile difficult to straighten. The same part also needs a dependable mounting face, holes, and a finish that does not compromise the thermal interface. Those needs have to be resolved as one finished-part drawing.

The brief starts with the finished part and its assembly requirements. Process and inspection choices follow those requirements rather than a generic tolerance claim.

The proposed production route

Each decision is made before the next stage is released.
  1. 01

    Review the cross-section

Balance fin walls with the base, avoid fragile narrow features, and identify the face that will transfer heat. Die choice and trial criteria follow the approved section rather than an assumed stock profile.

  2. 02

    Plan secondary features

Cut the extrusion to its finished length and machine the mounting face and hole pattern from a common datum. Keep enough allowance for the specified finish and any protected contact zone.

  3. 03

    Inspect the finished component

Check straightness, profile dimensions, mounting-face condition, and hole position after the required downstream operations. Protect fin edges and visible surfaces in packaging.

What the inspection plan needs to protect

These checks keep the part's function visible from first article through repeat batches.
  • Fin geometry and profile straightness after extrusion
  • Mounting-face flatness and surface condition
  • Hole pattern relative to the defined machining datum
  • Finish coverage and protected thermal-contact areas

Outcome and engineering takeaway

The result is an assembly-ready process specification that joins profile, machining, finish, and inspection decisions under explicit acceptance criteria.
Takeaway

A successful extrusion program is defined by the finished interface. Decide which features belong in the constant section and which are better made by secondary CNC operations.
